SMG, in conjunction with twice Dakar Rally winner Jean-Louis Schlesser, have built a ‘Desert Buggy’ for you and now offers an exclusive new package - the Buggy Desert Cup - for a complete price of120,000 Euros (including use of a Buggy, service assistance, entries for the Dakar Rally, a support team, technical support ).
The Buggy Desert Cup is a series of 10 single-seater Buggies, prepared to an identical specification by SMG and using chassis technology by Jean-Louis Schlesser.
‘’The idea of a single-seater formula has been in my head for quite a long time,’’ explained Philippe Gache. ‘’It has not been excluded from my thoughts that, one day, I will register for the Dakar in a single-seater. I have been able to pass down my experience of our Buggies that are actually very reliable, but also built like a real car capable of taking part in the Dakar Rally and giving a competitor the chance to compete within a reasonable budget.’’
‘’The single-seater category permits a driver to use a very small car, which is light, handles well and will bring a lot of pleasure to the driver. The power-to-weight ratio of the Buggy Desert is very impressive and it is equipped with ventilated brake discs, four and six piston calipers, a five-speed sequential Mendeola transmission and an automatic tyre inflation and deflation system, automatically permitted in the regulations for two-wheel drive vehicles. The suspension has good road clearance. In brief, this is a real car for the terrain.’’

Jean-Louis Schlesser, brainchild of the project, recalls his first thoughts. ‘’I raced alone for several years and I always regretted that no one could see what an exceptional and very enriching experience it was for me. I have chosen this option because, journalistically speaking, it is very interesting and media coverage is very important.’’
The Desert Buggy is a great alternative for motorcyclists who would like to take part in a car without ruining the experience of a great personal adventure.
Using his experience in the construction of Buggies, Jean-Louis Schlesser has designed a tubular chassis for the Buggy Desert at his workshops in Mouans-Sartoux before delivering them to SMG to be fully-equipped.
Etienne Lavigne, the Director of the Dakar, supports the Buggy Desert Cup with great enthusiasm.
